Rally Mexico finally ended, as most competitors would say. Total of 65 drivers started this hell race and 46 reached the finish, but just 15 did it without Super Rally. So far it's the most victims demanded event of Open RBR-LT WRC 2019 season. The last day of Rally Mexico should be just a finishing accord with three more stages, but boy oh boy it wasn't easy finish for no one..
Almost everybody thought that Anton Kochetkov will easily win here in Mexico with big advantage and after Alex Karkach retirement in first stage of last day these thoughts just got stronger. Before longest stage of this rally Anton had more than 2min advantage against Tomek Wach in second place. But 22,1km long Mesa Cuata special stage was a real card mixer here in Mexico. Luckily for Anton it wasn't fatal, he got out dry after this stage but lost massive 50 seconds to Tomek Wach who finished 2nd in SS20,- "Just Amazing !!! 2 x C4H in the row, Just Perfect GRIP!! Shit day for me, lost 1.5 minutes from 1 SS - no words". Surprisingly the winner of this longest stage was Swedish Hasse Onkamo with quite old and reasonably slow "Opel Corsa S2000", unfortunately Hasse has some Super Rally minutes so his position in overall is far away. After Kochetkov's mistake Tomek was 1min 30sec behind him and maybe had some thoughts that Anton could be dis balanced and make some more mistakes in the last stage. But it was Pole himself who made the mistake in very last stage while Anton won it and won the whole rally by over 2 minutes against Tomek. After not finishing in Rallye Monte-Carlo due to technical issues and finishing 2nd in Rally Sweden, Anton finally takes his first victory in Open RBR-LT WRC 2019 season.
All of this was just a start of last day adventures. Paulo Tempera was trying to reach a podium all rally and after Alex's retirement in SS19 Portugese had all chances to finish in 3rd place. Well SS20 was showing no mercy for one more driver. Paulo showed just 27th time and lost 3min to stage winner Hasse. And two guys who were behind him fighting for 4th place, immediately got a chance to fight for 3rd. Flying Finn Jyrki Niemela with "Ford Fiesta R5" was holding Libor Tomecek behind him the whole rally. But Czech with much more faster "Toyota Yaris WRC" was just 12sec behind Jyrki after second leg and it promised no good for Scandinavian. In SS19 Libor cut 9 seconds from Jyrki leaving just 3.07sec between them and in the SS20 Libor finally overcome Finn by winning back 8 more seconds. In the end Libor clinched 3rd place with 10.67sec advantage against Jyrki who left 4th.
It is 3 out of 3 for Tomek Wach. He won all events in WRC 2 so far but seems he want's something more,- "Silly mistake on the last stage after driving so calm on the previous stages... I'm really disappointed with my perfomance...". Jyrki Niemela still doesn't find antidotes for for Tomek's victories and has to be satisfied with 2nd place for a 3rd time in a row, this time with 1min 41sec behind Pole. "Results is good ,but last stage i crashed and lost about 8sec",- said Jyrki after finish. With no fight, 3rd place, after Echedei Benitez retirement, was taken by debutante Jan Gais form Slovakia (+6min from Tomek).
WRC 3 classification is also lacking competition for 1st place. Oscar Estévez takes 3rd win in a row this time leaving closest opponent almost 10min behind him. After Alex Karkach mistake in SS19 Oscar again got a top 10 position in overall classification finishing 10th. "I'm tired... very bad rally for me. Thanks RBR-LT for rally. See you next time",- spoke Oscar. Milan Reznicek had Mariusz Domanus on his tale after second leg. But Czech drove with very good pace last day and increased his advantage from 6sec to 49 and took 2nd place leaving Mariusz in 3rd.
This rally should increase the intrigue in standings tables as many new drivers will get their first points and we see more and more countries entering Open RBR-LT WRC 2019 season. Rally Mexico welcomed 17 different nations. Next week we are going back to Europe for a Azores Rallye in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel. This will be like a little training before next WRC event. These ERC event will be much shorter and will have less points into drivers accounts. More about it's formalities You can find in Open RBR-LT WRC 2019 regulations. See You in Portugal.
